2nd Street Sunday Funday Stroll (Hosted by In Between Rivers)

This past Sunday, I was invited by Briana of In Between Rivers to participate in their inaugural 2nd Street Sunday Funday Stroll. IBR is a professional content creating service that's seeking to partner with restaurants and local businesses to engage with their followers. They're unique in that they have a passion for photography and produce higher-quality content than what you might find on your local Insta.

United by Blue
144 N. 2nd Street

We started off our stroll by meeting up with other local bloggers at United by Blue's Old City storefront. Created by Temple alums Brian Linton and Mike Cangi in 2010, UBB is focused on outdoor products with a sustainable, environmental focus. From organic cotton tees to responsible, durable goods that include bags and accessories, they also put their money where their mouth is.

United by Blue

UBB removes a pound of trash from the earth's oceans and waterways for every product sold. In fact, they hosted a cleanup the same week they sold their first T-shirt! Their next cleanup is at Pier 68 and thus far, they've removed over a million pounds of trash!

United by Blue - Pastries and Baked Goods from Frangelli's & High Point Bakery

At UBB, they also emphasize local. Quality coffee (Reanimator) and pastries (Frangelli's & High Point Bakery) are on offer. On this hot day, I grabbed an iced Americano and enjoyed scones and cronuts.

Tartes Fine Cakes and Pastries
212 Arch Street

Tartes - Key Lime Tartes, Pumpkin Pie Cakes, Cannelles

The second stop on our 2nd St. Sunday Stroll was Tartes. Owned by Pastry Chef Teresa Wall, you can stroll up to the pop-up window to grab pastries to go. Better yet, step inside for a revealing look at the creations from someone who's responsible for many of the city's desserts over the years (Monk's, Grace's Tavern, Nodding Head, and Anthony's Coffeehouse, to name a few). Chef Wall brought out a trio of tasty delights for us to try, including texturally perfect rum & vanilla cannelles, pumpkin cakes, and key lime tartes. Regular readers know that I'm a sucker for key lime pie and Wall's tart hit all the notes I was looking for.

Sassafras
48 S. 2nd Street

Sassafras Bar - Barbados Redux [Bottom Left] & Gypsy Eyes [Bottom Right]

For our final stop, we were treated to a few craft cocktails and the seasonal menu from Sassafras. A classic Philly bar in the best sense of the word, the bartenders are charming. Sassafras itself has been serving Philadelphians for more than 35 years. And while the owners have changed over the years, this has resulted in sleek updates that maintain the Old World charm. Their Barbados Redux was easy summer drinking and perfect for the hot weather. It featured aged Trinidadian rum (Scarlet Ibis) married with velvet falernum, the latter of which flavored the smooth rum with a light spice and citrusy tones. The Gypsy Eyes was boozier, but just as delightful. I never say no to local Bluecoat, with the light floral essence amped up with the sweet and bitter essence of aperol and the herbaceous chartreuse.

Sassafras Bar - Mac n Cheese Bites, French Onion Soup, Spinach & Artichoke Dip, Pulled Pork Sandwich, Chicken Pot Pie [Clockwise from Top Left]

Sassafras has a small menu, but the Chef executes well. Mac n Cheese bites were a favorite - crisp on the outside, gooey within, and just enough tart marinara to brighten things up. Other bar staples included French onion soup, spinach and artichoke dip, and pulled pork sandwiches. Their chicken pot pie was down home as well with a nicely crusted puff pastry revealing tender chunks of chicken and root veggies.

Without hesitation, I'd highly recommend stopping by all three of our stops I visited during the IBR 2nd Street Sunday Funday Stroll. I know I'll be by again soon!

Emile Henry USA Annual Warehouse Sale Event (New Castle, DE)

Emile Henry USA, Inc.
Annual Warehouse Sale Event
Oct 27 - 28th

Regular readers know that I obviously love to eat out at restaurants. But unless you follow me on Instagram, you might not know that I also love to cook at home. And let me tell you, cooking is made easier and is certainly a lot more fun with the proper tools at your disposal. Case in point, you'd be amazed at how much better your omelettes will be with a proper non-stick pan. And for those struggling to find the motivation to cook during the week due to the eventual cleanup that awaits? Be sure to stick with one-pot meals!

The Emile Henry One Pot offers up a modern version of the French casserole dish and is perfect for creating a variety of delicious one-pot meals. The 8.9 inch tall, 2-quart pot features a potbelly curve and is ideal for reducing broth for rice, risotto, and pastas or for braising! It has an upturned rim so you can avoid spills during cooking or drips while serving.

It's great at retaining heat and helps to cook your dishes evenly. From the freezer to the microwave or oven, on the grill or on the stove top, it's also dishwasher safe and easy to clean. The GF and I recently made a light and easy lemon-garlic chicken and asparagus dish with black-lentil penne for Sunday Supper. You know how Sundays can be ... all you want to do is relax. Because this was all in one pot, the post-meal clean up was incredibly easy!

Obviously you can purchase the Emile Henry One Pot from a variety of stores including Sur La Table, Williams Sonoma, and even Amazon! But why not check out the Annual Emile Henry USA Warehouse Sale Event on October 27th (3-9PM) and 28th (9AM-3PM) in New Castle, Delaware. Their products are on sale for up to 80% off retail prices and it's the only time of the year the warehouse is open to the public! They also partner with Meals on Wheels of Delaware and donate a portion of all sales. In addition to the One Pot, you can pick up French ceramic pie dishes, copper skillets, and hundreds of other kitchen products! Be sure to stop by and tag me in your next home-cooked meal!

Twisted Tail: Whiskey Bonanza 2017

This past Thursday night, Twisted Tail hosted their fourth Whiskey Bonanza. Featuring over 70 whiskies, including bourbons, scotches, wine, and brandies, it was clearly a big draw. In fact, the restaurant had plenty of folks stopping by for the VIP hour from 6-7PM, with the main event running until 10PM.

Twisted Tail - Whiskey Bonanza

What was available during the VIP hour? Chef Leo Forneas executed a Southern pig roast, with several de-boned suckling pigs served to order. In addition, select whiskies were offered up during the hour. And throughout the night, local bartenders were serving up three specialty whiskey cocktails for Bonanza attendees to vote on.

Twisted Tail - Whiskey Bonanza

I spent much of the night indulging in a wide array of whiskies, ranging from Maker's and Jim Beam to Stitzell-Weller & Buffalo Trace favorites, W.L Weller, Rebel Yell, and Eagle Rare. My favorite tastes of the night had to be Suntory's Hibiki Harmony whiskey and Jefferson's Presidential Select aged bourbon. Each unique in its own right, I appreciated that they were especially smooth and had a wonderful finish.

Twisted Tail - Whiskey Bonanza Pork Belly

And of course, I kept coming back to Chef Leo's fantastic pork. Coupling the crisp cracklings with the porchetta-esque belly was pure heaven. So if you missed this year's Bonanza, be sure to subscribe to Twisted Tail's mailing list for all of their whiskey events. Better yet, stop by to try the select whiskies on their list and their seasonal menu.

Pro-Tip: They've got a cask-strength Maker's batch that's being specially aged in-house. It should be available for purchase in December!

Philadelphia Brew & Eat Tours with Philly Limos

*Sponsored Guest Post*

Philadelphia is the perfect city to embark on a food and drink tour! With all of the award winning restaurants that have been established, as well as new eateries popping up all of the time, there are seemingly endless options to choose from when you and your friends are going out on the town. If you're looking for some spots to add to your itinerary for dining and drinking, we're here with some suggestions for some fantastic quality brews and food options at these local brewing companies. You're sure to leave these places filled to the brim and satisfied.

Be sure to consider a safe mode of transportation for yourself and your friends if you plan on drinking through the night. One of the best ways to do this is to consider a party bus or limo, as it ends up to be just as affordable as an Uber with a lot more features when it is split up among the group.

You'll be happy that you prepared for your night of high quality food and drink with this type of transportation. For more information, head over to phillypartybus.com.

Evil Genius Beer Company
Fishtown, PA

Courtesy of Yelp

While the selection here leans toward IPAs, there's a little something for everybody to enjoy when you check out their large menu of food and drinks. There's a subtle 90's theme here, so millennials will especially enjoy drinking here. Flights are under twelve dollars and include five different brews, so it's a generally affordable spot to check out while you're on your brew tour.

Yards Brewing Company
Northern Liberties, PA

Courtesy of Yelp

Yards is a popular option known for their informative, entertaining tours of their brewing facilities where you're offered samples as you walk through. With five dollar pints and seven dollar flights, it's easy to enjoy many different types of beer here without breaking the bank. For history buffs, they even offer brews that are supposedly the same recipes that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson used themselves.

Second District Brewing
Pennsport, PA

Second District is a local brewery and beer bar serving up traditional American food as well as some vegan options. We love the open atmosphere with exposed brick. There aren't flights offered here, but there are usually eight rotating beers on tap, and don't leave without trying their popular Vietnamese Coffee Stout. It's out of this world! The sliders, curly fries, and vegan sausage sandwiches are all great option to consider as far as food goes.

Gringo Bandito Hot Sauce Product Review

I was recently shipped Gringo Bandito's line of hot sauces to check out. Another hot sauce you say? Well this one's got the sales and the face to back it up! It all started over 10 years ago by Dexter Holland (yes, Dexter of the multi-platinum punk rock band, The Offspring). Initially given away by Holland as a Christmas gift, it has since taken off from Southern Cali to sell over a million bottles nationwide and around the world.

The original red is the milder version, but with a nice bold flavor that was perfect to amp the flavor of peppers and onions for fajitas.

The green uses unripened habaneros instead of tomatillos. So be prepared for a spicier version than your typical verde. Delicious to spice up some lighter dishes like my fish and cauliflower rice burrito bowl.

If you're looking to go super spicy, check out their Super Hot version, which utilizes ghost and scorpion peppers to create a natural (no additives!), but scorching blend. It worked to create an addictive hit of heat with some leftover Percy Street BBQ brisket and pulled pork.

You can buy it online on their website or at your local store so be sure to check it out!

Heirzoom Popup at Reading Terminal Market

I first encountered Heirzoom's phenomenal fennome pastries at the West Chester Artisan
ExchangePassed down through the generations, founder Diane Holtaway learned the Hungarian recipe from her aunt Betty. Crisp, buttery, and wonderfully light, these gustatory delights were one of the highlights of my trip to the Artisan Exchange. So when I heard that Diane was bringing Heirzoom to Reading Terminal Market in the form of a Sunday popup, I knew I had to stop by!

Every Sunday from 9-5PM, Diane will be selling the pastries at RTM. She'll even show you how to make them! Each of these delicious bites are handmade - no two are exactly the same! It's a family-run operation, and when I stopped by this past Sunday, she was with her son highlighting their product to the crowds, right by the Metropolitan Bakery on the NE corner of the market.

Heirzoom Fennome Three-Pack [$4]

Fennomes are inspired by the Hungarian term "finom." Meaning delicious, delicate, and tasty, it's wonderfully emblematic of each bite. Artisanally made with sweet cream butter, unbleached flour, and pure cane sugar, each fennome is filled with all-natural jams and fillings, including blueberry, strawberry, apricot, and raspberry. Treat yourself and obviously, they're perfect for gifting!

Heirzoom Fennome Box [$12]

You can also get an entire box of these fennomes to share with the family or your co-workers. These can come decorated with chocolate, offering a nice richness to contrast with the sugary crystals studding the fennomes. Absolutely no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives!

So be sure to stop by on Sundays at RTM and stop by to try Diane's heirloom recipe. You won't be sorry. And if you can't make it on Sundays, stop by their website to get them shipped!

Autograph Brasserie: Scent & Food Pairing Event

Sure, we've all had the perfect wine pairing, but have you ever had the perfect candle scent or perfume to accentuate your mood, or meal? In an effort to provide a unique experience, Autograph is partnering with diptyque for a home fragrance and food-pairing event.

Guests will be able to discover the fragrances and raw materials behind diptyque, with Chef Fernandez translating three iconic eau de perfumes into three courses: dyptique's Philoskyos scent of fig leaves, wood, sap, and black pepper will be paired with Humboldt Fog goat cheese toast with black mission fig jam, barrel aged black pepper balsamic, and fall herbs. L'Ombre dans L'Eau of Bulgarian Rose, black currant buds, petit grain, and black currant leaves will be paired with black currant honey-glazed duck breast, autumn spiced root vegetables, Red Jewel sweet potatoes, and cassis huckleberry duck jus. Shoo Fry: Breakfast Menu Review

After traveling through Canada, Matt and Rachel Baida decided to share their passion for poutine with Philly. After a 6 month stint as King of Prussia pop-up, they decided to take over the previous Underdogs space with a permanent location in Rittenhouse. The craze for poutine has clearly taken off, so they've recently expanded with a second location in Fishtown.

Top Right: Shoo Fry Proprieters Rachel & Matt Baiada

But that's not all that's been going on. They've also expanded their menu to include breakfast offerings. Think breakfast sliders and diced hash browns covered with all of your typical poutine fixings!

Breakfast Sliders
Original [American Cheese, Pickles], The Blue [Blue Cheese, Bacon, Fried Onions, BBQ], Scrapple [Fried Egg, Cheddar, Ketchup], Pepper Goat [Goat Cheese, Bacon, Pepper Jelly], Poutine in a Cup [Fried Onions, Cheese Curds, Gravy]

With the exception of the Poutine in a Cup slider for $4, the rest are only $3! It doesn't get more Philly than with a scrapple slider. The thin patty was nicely crisp and redolent with porcine flavors. This melded well with the fried egg and cheddar. It's all housed in a soft, pillowy, potato roll. Just the right size and perfect for breakfast. Grab two or three of these to go!

Breakfast Hashbrowns

Looking for something more substantial? You know Shoo Fry's got great poutine. So expect the crisp texture of hash browns to soak up all of Shoo Fry's toppings. I tried a trio of the chipped beef, cheesesteak, and the Sugar Shack.

The latter's a clear ode to Canada. Maple sugar shacks offer up sweet treats by dripping maple syrup into cold shaved ice. Shoo Fry's maple bacon melded sweet and savory flavors nicely, emanating a nice balance for breakfast. And obviously, everything's better with an egg on it.

So stop by Shoo Fry and check out their new offerings. Satisfyingly satiating, Shoo Fry's breakfast menu will get you through the work week.

Masala Kitchen Review

There aren't many issues I have with the Philly food scene. It's a large reason why I've stayed in Philly vs. moving back to NY or Chicago. But if there's an area where the city could improve is in the availability of late night eats. I often dream of the "street meat" halal carts where you can stop by to get what you crave when it's past 2AM, all for a reasonable price. Thanks to Marilyn from Philly Grub, I've recently stumbled upon the solution - Masala Kitchen

Proprieter Vai Sonu and Chef Arjun have partnered up to bring flavor bombs in the form of Calcutta-style Indian street food. With most wraps and rolls, you've often stuck with a dry, tough flour tortilla that lacks flavor on its own. With Masala Kitchen, every bite is seasoned and will tantalize your taste buds without going overboard. It's also extremely portable, affordable, and almost everything made in-house.

Rose | Mango Lassi [$3.25]
Traditional yogurt-based drink
Kala Khatta [$2.25]
Sweet, tangy blackberry fruit

Pick up a couple of their lassi's to go. The traditional Indian yogurt-based drink is flavored with either mango or rose syrup and appear to be the perfect breakfast or workout smoothie. The Kala Khatta less viscous and is subtly sweet with a nice blackberry flavor. The mint lemonade was easy drinking as well, with the herbaceous sweetness offering up the perfect palate cleansing drink to end your meal.

Chicken Biryani [$9]
Marinated chicken, basmati rice

Note: Pricing listed is a la carte and this was a larger group portion

MK's basmati rice is cooked perfectly, with juicy chunks of marinated chicken strewn throughout. And yes, they have the white and red sauces you often associate with street food. Balance each bite with the cooling white or amp up your spice level with the red!

Paneer Masala Roll [$5.50]
Homemade cottage cheese, creamy tomato gravy "Makhani"
Chicken Kheema Roll [$5.25]
Ground chicken, lentil, Indian spices

But for me, the rolls are where it's at. The light and gluttonous paratha bread is lightly griddled on a large cast-iron tawa, which MK then fills with a number of delicious options. I'm usually not a big fan of paneer as it doesn't have much flavor on its own, but when coupled with their Makhani gravy, it's a blast of flavor that had me coming back for more. The chicken kheema offers a more savory spiced route, but nothing a douse of the white sauce can't balance out for the less intrepid eaters out there.

MK also has a number of healthy rolls including a beet root and crispy cabbage roll. They just recently released a Pepperwala roll that marries juicy marinated chicken and their fresh-made paneer with crisp, fried green peppers. Just as delicious and definitely filling!

So if you're looking for the perfect lunch or dinner option on the run - Masala Kitchen has you covered. And if you're out late on Friday or Saturday night and seeking a bit more flavor than your 24 hour Wawa, head over to MK. They're open until 3:30AM and you'll go to bed happy!

Plantation Restaurant Review

This is for a series of posts including Tucker's TavernDaddy O Rooftop Bar, and
Plantation Restaurant.

For our final night in LBI, we stopped by Plantation Restaurant in the borough of Harvey Cedars. Spacious, elegant, and of course, with a classic centerpiece bar, it was clearly the spot to be on a Saturday night on the Island. All the tables were packed with plenty of folks enjoying the live music by the bar.

Plantation Restaurant

Chef Jeff Alberti executes a New American menu, with the flavors of the Island clearly shining through. There really is something for everyone, but with the polish and finesse you'd expect from a larger city.

Goombay Smash [$13]
Pyrat XO Rum, Amaretto, Cruzan Coconut Rum, Island juice

Plantation Restaurant - Goombay Smash

When in Rome ... so I started off with the Goombay Smash. Easy drink with the smoothness of the Pyrat and the caramel flavors from the amaretto marrying well with the coconut rum and citrus.

Tikitini [$10]
Cruzan Coconut & Pineapple Rums, pineapple juice, toasted coconut rim

The GF's cocktail was a lot of fun, with a toasted coconut rim and the tikitini itself being served tableside. This will also go down incredibly easy, with the undertone of the coconut providing a nice base for the sweet rum and citrus from the pineapple.

Bread Service

Plantation Restaurant - Tikitini

Your meal with start off with warm, house-baked rolls, served with pats of butter.

Spicy Tuna Nachos [$13]
Taro chips, avocado, sweet soy

Plantation Restaurant - Spicy Tuna Nachos

Spicy tuna nachos were really nice. I appreciated that the fresh tuna wasn't too finely diced, allowing for plenty of texture. Well-seasoned with the sweet soy reduction and some citrus, these came atop taro chips which imparted a subtle sweetness I enjoyed.

Viking Village Scallops & Bacon [$14]
Horseradish crema, pepper jam

Plantation Restaurant - Scallops & Bacon

Sweet, tender Viking Village scallops were wrapped with crisp, salty bacon. There was a subtle kick from the horseradish crema and the sweet pepper jam for some balance.

Lump Crabcakes [$33]
Local spinach-cherry tomato salad, NJ corn, dill aioli, matchstick potatoes

Plantation Restaurant - Lump Crabcakes

The GF's main featured three (count it, three!) crabcakes. The jumbo lump crab was clearly discernible, with its sweet salinity coming through. There was nice texture from the matchstick potatoes, with the dill aioli providing a nice creamy herbaceousness. The Plantation is not letting you go home hungry - this dish was easily enjoyed by two!

Faroe Islands Salmon [$29]
Tarragon ravioli, tomatoes, wild arugula-basil insalata

Plantation Restaurant - Faroe Islands Salmon

You're on the Island so you know the seafood game is going to be on point. The salmon was perfectly cooked with nice texture on the exterior and perfectly tender and flaky within. I enjoyed the peppery arugula-basil salad, with a sweet acidity from the fresh Jersey tomatoes. But the tarragon ravioli? Unreal! It was slightly bittersweet, with a nice anise flavor that complemented the heft of the fish. Highly recommend this dish!

Bacon Sweet Pea Risotto [$7]

Plantation Restaurant - Bacon Sweet Pea Risotto

As a side, we had to try the bacon sweet pea risotto. Creamy and sweet, with nice texture from the rice and the crisp bacon, this ate like a main in itself.

Key Lime Pie [$8]
Whipped cream, raspberry sauce

Plantation Restaurant - Key Lime Pie

I'm a sucker for key lime pie and the Plantation Restaurant's iteration was top notch. The buttery crust encased the light and subtly tart custard. Definitely the perfect palate cleanser to end our meal.

So if you're on LBI and looking to enjoy a proper dinner out, head north to Plantation Restaurant. And if you're simply looking for a proper drink in a sleek, yet warm atmosphere with relaxed Island vibes, they've got you covered as well!

Daddy O LBI Rooftop Bar Review

This is for a series of posts including Tucker's TavernDaddy O Rooftop Bar, and
Plantation Restaurant.

If you're looking for a boutique hotel experience coupled with a relaxed beach vibe, Daddy O LBI has got you covered. Sleek, well-designed, and with only 22 rooms, they clearly subscribe to the quality over quantity mentality. It's certainly not your typical sleepy overnight Long Beach Island spot. It houses a restaurant, outdoor dining, and a rooftop bar. All located just five doors down from Brant Beach! And for our first night on LBI, the GF and I stopped by to check out the rooftop bar.

Daddy O Rooftop Bar

There was a great crowd when we arrived around 9PM, ranging from well-heeled patrons lounging on beach chairs to a bachelorette party enjoying a few shots by the bar. At most places, it's often a fine line between classy and pretentious or active and rowdy. But on the Friday night we stopped by, with the music pumping and friendly bartenders pouring drinks, everyone was clearly enjoying themselves at Daddy O's Rooftop Bar!

Coral Margarita [$16] - Barrel-aged Patron Reposado, Licor 43, Patron Citronage, lemon, lime, simple syrup, Coral Hawaiian sea salt
Dark & Stormy [$12] - Gosling's Black Seal dark rum, Q Tonic spiced ginger beer, lime wedge

Coral Marg on the Left, Dark & Stormy on the Right

The GF enjoyed the Coral marg, with the depth of the barrel-aged reposado balanced nicely by the brightness from the Licor 43, Citronage, and fresh citrus. I went Dark & Stormy - an easy quaffer with the spiciness of the ginger beer tempered by the sweetness from the dark rum.

O Sushi Pizza [$18]
Sticky rice crust, tuna, avocado, jalapeno, spicy aioli, scallions, tobiko, tempura crunch

Noticing quite a few specialty sushi rolls on the menu, we started off with the sushi pizza. What exactly is sushi pizza? Think open-faced spicy tuna roll.

You've got crusty, sticky rice and nori as the base. This is then topped with a nice melange of spicy tuna and aioli, salty sweet tobiko, and creamy avocado, with some bite from the scallions and texture from the tempura. Light, fresh, and easy to enjoy as a late night snack.

Buffalo Wingless [$13]
Spicy Thai chili sauce, candied celery, Maytag blue, scallion

The GF's a sucker for boneless wings so we had to try these. With a tempered hit of spice, the sticky, sweet Thai sauce glazed the crispy chicken wings. The candied celery was a home run and was balanced by the funk of the Maytag Blue. Easy to see these being a bar favorite.

Blistered Shishito Peppers [$11]
White soy, Cape May sea salt

Shishitos aren't the most photogenic, but they're always satisfying. With a bit of salt and white soy, the smokiness of the shishito peppers make for an addictive summer snack. And they say about one in twenty are spicy so that's always a fun game to play, especially with a few good drinks in hand.

So if you've ever wondered what LBI has to offer at night, Daddy O has your answer. Head to their rooftop bar and enjoy the sea breeze with some rum or a few margs. It'll be the perfect nightcap to a long day at the beach.
