2013 Midtown Village Festival Review

This is part of a series of posts related to Chef Marcie Turney including: Verde, Lolita, the Midtown Village Festival, Jamonera, Little Nonna's, and Barbuzzo.

This post may be a bit late, but with the colder weather coming on through to Philly, one can't help but reminisce about the warm weather we had this past Fall. This year's Midtown Village Festival afforded everyone the ability to bask in perfect weather while indulging in a variety of great fare, listening to various bands, and perusing the craft stalls as well.

Even men on stilts were out to play!

The GF discovered these cute resin earrings for only $15 - crafted by Adorned by Aisha in Haddonfield, NJ.

Interested in adopting a pet pig? The MVF had that as well!

Or perhaps it's simply best to let your kids pet the cute porcine devils and then simply walk away.

I had to tear the GF away from Operation Ava though. What a cute pup!

But let's move on to the food - of which there was a glut of stalls offering all sorts of goodies.

Barbuzzo Retaurant

It's a safe bet to say that 13th street offers the best lineup of culinary goodies. So let's start with Barbuzzo, one of Chef Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran's restaurants. The power couple simply dominate Restaurant Row and with good reason.

Salted Caramel Budino Pops [$5]

Barbuzzo is the site of one of the GF and my first dates. Since then, we've been back several times and always get the salted caramel budino. So to finally get a taste of the budino pops was a real treat! The creamy caramel and pudding was encased by made-to-order chocolate outer shell. Occasional bits of sea salt encrusted the outside of the pop and provided that sweet and salty element that makes the dessert so great.

Pork Shoulder Porchetta [$8]
Provolone, broccoli rabe

I also had to try Barbuzzo's porchetta, which came with crisp bits of pork interspersed with juicy chunks as well. The creamy cheese sauce provided even more richness, with the bitter broccoli rabe providing a nice countervailing element.

Over at Opa's tent, the grill was brimming with meat and beer on tap!

Chicken Gyro [$5]

I went with the chicken gyro, which was well-marinated with yogurt and came dressed with creamy tzatziki and bitter arugula. I really do need to stop on by one day and try Opa's offerings.

Jake's Sandwich Board had a tent, offering chocolate covered bacon and their 50/50 pork sandwich, complete with pig's head display!

Nice to see Yelp on hand as well!

Hey, even R2D2 had to stop by the Festival!

From there, we moved on south to Smokin' Betty's booth.

We all know I can't help but order the Betty Burger every single time I go to Smokin' Betty's.

Pulled Pork Sandwich [$7]

And this time around, one of our friends got their pulled pork sandwich, which was apparently very good. Not surprising because their kitchen does turn out some great dishes.

Minar Indian Restaurant

The GF had the itch for some Indian cuisine, so we stopped by Minar's tent.

Veggie Biryani [$5]

The veggie biryani was creamy, redolent with curry spice. Hints of heat hit the back of the throat amidst the bevy of potatoes, carrots, and peas.

Mini Scorpion Bowl

To be clear, drinks were on hand throughout the festival. Sampan's Graffiti Bar offered up mini scorpion bowls for your drinking pleasure.

El Rey Restaurant

We also stopped by El Vez , where delicious guacamole and grilled corn adorned with chipotle mayo and queso were offered.

Jamonera Restaurant

Lastly, and perhaps appropriately, we stopped by Jamonera where Chef Marcie Turney was holding court, just like last year.

Papas Fritas [$5]

We ended our Midtown Festival feast with the papas fritas, something we always enjoy. Crunchy nuggets of potatoes layered with crema and spice offer a great salty bite.

So be sure to mark your calendars for the fall of 2014 where great eats and fun are sure to be had.

Verde Review

This is part of a series of posts related to Chef Marcie Turney including: Verde, Lolita, the Midtown Village Festival, Jamonera, Little Nonna's, and Barbuzzo.

Restaurant Row on 13th Street in Center City is one of the best neighborhoods to indulge in refined dishes in a casual, yet festive atmosphere. Chef Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran dominate the street with a nice variety of restaurants including Lolita, Barbuzzo, Jamonera, and most recently, Little Nonna's - just to name a few!

They're also affiliated with Verde, which offers a creative and cute take on well-crafted women's jewelry, clothes, and home accessories.

And of course, Marcie Blaine artisanal chocolates are on display in the large window in the back. It's also where Chef Turney's famed salted caramel budinos are crafted. When it's time, they're simply taken out the back door to Barbuzzo, which is right next door!

This past summer, these salted caramel budinos were transformed into budino pops. I finally had a chance to taste these at the 2013 Midtown Village Festival and they're a great transportable iteration of the GF and my favorite Philly dessert.

Salted Caramel Budino ($8)
Dark chocolate crust, vanilla bean caramel, sea salt

But back to the original! To celebrate the GF and my anniversary this year, we ended the night with some Moet and a pair of the salted caramel budinos.

Just look at the layers of goodness!

The cookie crumbles offer great texture to the smooth caramel and puddings, which has a perfect juxtaposition between salty and sweet. Each bite simply tantalizes your senses - many of which aren't necessarily typical of a standard dessert, but work so well.

You'll be happy to know that you don't need to eat in at Barbuzzo to get your hands on these bad boys (girls?). If you go to Verde, you can get them to go! A great way to end date night or simply indulge by yourself!

Amphora Lounge Review

This is for a series of posts for the Borgata Hotel & The Water Club including: Bobby Flay Steak, Wolfgang Puck American Grille, Wolfgang Puck American Grille [2], The Cafeteria, Tony Luke's, N.O.W., N.O.W. [2], Metropolitan, Sun Room, Sun Room [2], Old Homestead Steakhouse, Old Homestead Steakhouse [2], Fat Burger, 28 West, Gelato, the Borgata Buffet, Izakaya, Bread and Butter, and Fornelletto.

Regular readers know that I have a particular affinity for the Borgata Hotel, Casino, & Spa. It is simply the place to go in Atlantic City for all your gambling and food-related needs. And at the Borgata, if you attain Black Card status, if affords you some special privileges, including free rooms and comps at the Borgata Hotel.

But one of my favorite perks is the exclusive access to the Amphora Lounge. The food is of higher quality, the lines are not as long as the Borgata Buffet, and most importantly, you've got top shelf liquor completely comped.

During the summer, Amphora Lounge is open on Mondays through Thursdays from 2 to 10PM. Fridays, it's open until 11PM. And on Saturdays and Sundays, the Lounge opens at 11AM.

All you need is your Black Card and $10 in comps. Then you and a guest can descend down the escalators.

Feel free to order up some drinks at the bar ...

... or grab a seat in the dining room and your server will bring one for you!

They've got a special section with multiple channels on offer - golf, tennis, the news ... they really do try to accomodate your needs.

But let's move on to the food!

The offerings are not as widely varied as the Borgata Buffet, but the quality is certainly better.

The GF and I came for breakfast and partook in some crispy apple-wood smoked bacon, plump chicken maple sausage, and cheese blintzes.

For brunch, other offerings included oatmeal, ham steaks, parmesan pommes, scrambled eggs, and cinnamon swirl french toast.

They even have an omelet station with a variety of ingredients to add!

Other offerings included chicken with rhubarb vinaigrette, red snapper with a spicy watermelon coulis, and a shaved zucchini salad. But for the GF, it was all about the dessert station at center stage.

Mimosa

To whet her appetite, the GF started off with a mimosa.

Johnnie Walker Black

And I started off the morning with Johnnie Walker Black Label - again all comped. Granted it was only 11AM in the morning, but it was a Saturday and we were planning to spend the rest of the morning at The Water Club pool!

San Pellegrino

Some sparkling water was in order as well.

The cheddar bay biscuits were pretty good, but admittedly (though somewhat reluctantly), they're not as good as Red Lobster!

The GF and I indulged in some carrot cake pops and delicious coconut macaroons - trust me, you have to get the latter. Completely gluttonous and rich - it's heaven in your mouth.

Or you can indulge in a homemade apple tartlet!

Cappuccino

Perhaps you can end your meal with a cappuccino and then, feel free to gamble in the casino, head to the pool, and have a grand old time in Atlantic City. It's certainly no Vegas, but the Borgata does a great job taking care of its regulars and newcomers alike!
